The Shuar Village

Arriving in the Amazon Village

Dear Reader

In our last email we shared about The Journey to the Amazon region of Ecuador. We’re continuing the journey with our next chapter in the series which shares about the Shuar village.

Each day began with the same hour-long journey, ending at the first of three rivers we had to cross. While most of the team crossed on foot, a few drove across in a 4×4 loaded with our essential daily supplies.

Upon our arrival, the village children ran out to greet us with immense excitement. After meeting with local leaders including the pastor, the school teacher, and the mayor, we jumped straight into work. Half of our team focused on the construction site, while the other half ran a Bible camp for the children and youth.

We were deeply moved by the community’s warmth and their gratitude for a simple way of life, though the challenges they face were equally clear. Remote villages like this are often overlooked by government services. The three rivers make traveling to local towns for work or supplies difficult, and the village remains without electricity despite embracing other modern changes over the last 50 years. They are eager to expand educational opportunities, but currently, schooling stops at the primary level (ages 5–11), and access to further learning materials remains severely limited.

Our time in the village concluded with a beautiful presentation of traditional dances performed by the youth.

Afterward, our youth group gathered to debrief and process the outreach experience. The overwhelming theme that emerged was a desire to live with greater gratitude a trait modeled so profoundly by the people we met.

Thank you for being part of our journey, for your prayers and support. As God has called us all to be part of His mission and the Great Commission we all are able to make a difference.

Love and Blessings
